Sony Bravia TV Volume Control with a Yamaha AVR

I’m building an interface for my in-house AV system and have run into a conundrum.

Let me preface this with, this interface will be put on some Samsung Tablets around the house. All the interfaces will be the same. They are primarily for my wife’s usage. She wants to turn something on the TV in the living room, and then listen to it in another room (zone).

I’ve got a Sony Bravia TV which is the source of the audio to be distributed around the house.

The Sony feeds audio signal via a HDMI eARC connection to a Yamaha TSR-700 (nee RX-V681) which outputs to a speakerset in the living room.

Ultimately, there will be three zones, with another TSR-700 driving the other two.

So I want volume controls for all three. The other TSR-700 is easy. Got those done.

The problem is the TV. There are effectively two volume controls, one for the TV itself and one for the AVR.

Adjusting the volume on the TV adjusts the volume of the AVR, but adjusting the volume of the AVR does not adjust the volume setting on the TV. Obviously, the played volume changes, but the volume setting on the TV doesn’t change.

I can control the AVR volume in HA very simply. Just a slider. The TV volume control in HA acts much like a remote control, intermittent taps and the volume increases.

Here is the control:

There is what looks like a slider, but all it does is echo the current volume setting. To change the volume, the Vol+/Vol- buttons must be tapped, much like a remote.

I’m worried about the volume levels getting out of sync between the TV and the AVR. My wife is completely oblivious to this type of stuff, and I could see her jacking up the volume from one of the tablets, and then coming into the living room to adjust the volume having it all out of sync.

If the sync got way out of whack, the only recourse would be to power toggle the AVR. It’s set to a default volume level.

Any ideas on how it might be possible to keep these in sync?

Thank you
