Rest timeout leads to erroneous automation trigger

I have a rest integration that checks the level of some water tanks. This has been working fine for a while.

I have an automation based on this value that sends me a CRITICAL iphone notification if the level climbs above a certain level (70%)

Last night it woke me up at ~5:20am with an alarm. I looked into it and the levels were completly fine (and even reported find in HA graphs). I looked into the logs and found that there was a timeout. Im guessing the host of the API had a server reboot or something. My question is - why did this timeout trigger the automation and/or what is the best way to deal with this? Did the timeout cause the value to be null/undefined? Does that count as being outside of the 0-70 range I have in my automation?
