Avoiding accidental turn offs when using voice

$

0

This is a daft one to which I suspect there isn’t really an answer, but I thought I’d ask to see what ideas come out.

We use voice control a lot (thru Google) particularly to turn lights on and off, usually independently but sometimes as a group (e.g. lounge).

Once in a while the dreaded response comes back “Turning off 97 things” which means it’s misinterpreted the voice command and loads of stuff turns off. I find it funny, my partner finds it annoying!! The 97 things are just those consciously exposed to Google so it is mostly limited to non-essential lights and switches.

I have no idea whether or how it’s possible to avoid this - the best I can come up with is to watch for a command which turns off more than x items (how?) and somehow throw a warning or require a confirmation before doing it maybe? But that could be clumsy.

As an aside, I do have an automation which goes round every 5 minutes and checks the status of the critical items (in particular fridges) and turns them on if off (and sends reporting).

Any ideas?

Card-mod unusable? It slows everything down so much?

$

Basically as the title says, for years now I have avoided using card-mod as it literally just renders my dashboard unusable. It can take like a minute to load my dashboard, trying to navigate the dashboard is extremely and painfully slow and unresponsive.

If I switch out of my HA tab, and then back in, it just doesn’t load, its just white. Maybe caching?

I dont know why this is and I feel like I am missing out on some cool shit with card-mod. I am using the Material Rounded Dark Theme.

Any ideas? I have something I want to do with card-mod now.

Thanks

Visualize long term sensors that are not energy related

$

Hi,

I have a total increasing sensor of downloaded/uploaded size for my internet usage (native unit is bytes).
I would like to visualize that and being able to select different views like week, month and year.

Basically pretty much like the energy dashboard for power usage, but for other sensor types (that have nothing to do with energy) like data usage.

Is there any way to do this currently (maybe using a custom card)?
Currently I use the statistics card but it only shows the transferred amount for a fixed time as number. I would like to have a graph and being able to switch between week, month and year.

Building groups using the UI

I have a bunch of lights I want to turn on and off from a single switch (it happens to be a multi button in wall insteon keypad). I saw some references to using Groups in youtube videos. They seem to refer to going into the configurations area of the UI. However, I’m not seeing that area in HA.

I’m new to HA and I’m trying to limit my learning for the time being to things I can do in the UI. YAML will be after Im comfortable using the UI to build things.

Can anyone point me to where groups are built and any up-to-date documentation for this that would be helpful to a noob.

Thanks

Skip_words not used in sentence trigger

Hi,
I created a _commons.yaml file under custom_sentences/it/
to insert some skip words:

language: "it"

skip_words:
  - "...."
  - "..."

The skip words so defined work perfectly on default Assist sentences, instead are not used in custom sentences defined in “sentence triggers”.

Is there a way to use the skip_words also in sentence triggers?

I am using fotawesome custom icons, e.g. fapro:“NAME”

Those were correctly displayed until a few days ago, but (I think) since the update to HA Core 2025.02.02, they are not displayed anymore.

Any idea what’s wrong and how to fix it?

Thanks for support.

Swipe-Card works on one device but not another

$

I have two Crestron touch panels that I am using in my home that tie back to HA. One my TSW-1070 panel, swipe card works perfectly (tried to insert pic, but I’m limited to one embedded image per post).

But on my TSW-770 panel, I’m getting the “custom element doesn’t exist” error:

Any ideas what would be causing this error on one panel and not the other? I copied and pasted the exact yaml config across both panels.

I even tested the config on my TSW-760 panel, and it worked without issue.

Thanks!

Weather forcast entity not working out of the box

Hi,

I’m new to home assistant and I installed it on Raspberry Pi5. It works great with Zigbee devices, however I have some issue with the basic Weather.forcast_home entity out of the box.

For unknow reason, it does not retrieve data related to my location set in Settings > System > edit location.

So on the overview board, I have the classic error message that entity is currently unavailable.

I’m lost. What’s wrong with it ?

thx

Unreliable IKEA Parasoll E2013 Door/Window Sensors

$

I really like these, they use a single AAA, they are cheap but feel well built.

But

  1. Seeing they burn through batteries quite quickly
  2. Drop off zigbee2MQTT quite frequently and need repairing

But the big one that really makes this unreliable is that often the device is showing as connected and working. The door/window opens, the red light flashes indicating that the device has recognised the event, and yet nothing reported in zigbee2MQTT.

The worst combination, appears to be working and reporting but not reporting events.

I can see absolutely no use in a sensor that may or may not reports events especially related to doors or windows.

So having given these, 7 of them, a good go for a year I can report unless someone here comes up with a fix they will consigned to the trash, or at least put on the ‘dodgy’ pile in the hope they get upgraded and become reliable.

Anyone else with good/bad experiences with these?

Moving sensitive information from configuration.yaml to secrets.yaml NOT working!

My original lines in the configuration.yaml for the MariaDB:

recorder:
  db_url: mysql://homeassistant:1q2w3eAZSXDC@core-mariadb/homeassistant?charset=utf8mb4
  purge_keep_days: 30

in my configuration.yaml NOW I have this:

# Credentials for the database MariaDB
recorder:
  db_url: mysql://!secret mariadb_user:!secret mariadb_password@!secret mariadb_host/!secret mariadb_db?charset=!secret mariadb_charset
  purge_keep_days: 30

and in my secrets.yaml I got this:

#MariaDB credentials:
mariadb_user: homeassistant
mariadb_password: 1q2w3eAZSXDC
mariadb_host: core-mariadb
mariadb_db: homeassistant
mariadb_charset: utf8mb4

why is not working??
I started getting this errors:

Can someone help me get it right? I know there is NO need for secrets: !include secrets.yaml as it is included by default. Also, tryed changing the file from secrets.yaml to secret.yaml and that did not work so I reverted it back with the S

Any help will be appreciated! Thank

Orange Pi Zero 2W as MPD media player: only static noise with mp3 files

$

I am using an Orange Pi Zero 2W with an Orange Pi Expansion Board, with a speaker connected to the Expansion board 3,5 mm audio output.
The current OS on the Orange Pi is Orange Pi Debian Bookworm Server v 1.0.2
It is connected to the LAN via the ethernet connection.

I am now trying to use it as a MPD media player in Home Assistant, following this example:
Raspberry Pi Zero W as a media_player for Home Assistant
The idea is to use this setup as a media player with Voice Assistant.
So I installed alsa-utils and mpd, and than I could successfully play local wav files through the speaker with aplay.
In Home Assistant I did add the MPD integration, which successfully connected to the Orange Pi, and I can play wav files from the HA Media Player.

However, the problem is that when I play some mp3 sound from Home Assistant via the MPD media Player I only hear a loud static noise.
This is both with playing a mp3 directly from the media player interface, and with playing some spoken text via Piper TTS.
And I also cannot play mp3 files locally via aplay.
The duration of the sound seems to correspond to the original file, so it looks like the mp3 is transferred to the Orange Pi, but not correctly decoded?

Then I tried many different settings for MPD, added all by apt install MPD recommended and suggested packages, and added extra packages, like ffmpeg, mplayer, but unfortunately it still doesn’t work.
I can now play mp3 files locally with mplayer, but it still does not work with aplay and MPD.
So this must be some misconfiguration in MPD?

This is the current MPD configuration in etc/mpd.conf:

music_directory "/var/lib/mpd/music"
playlist_directory "/var/lib/mpd/playlists"
db_file "/var/lib/mpd/tag_cache"
#log_file "/var/log/mpd/mpd.log"
#pid_file "/run/mpd/pid"
state_file "/var/lib/mpd/state"

}

        enabled "yes"

        mixer_control "PCM" # optional
## mixer_index "0" # optional
}

I tried lots of different combinations of the above MPD settings, unfortunately to no avail.

This is what I got in the local MPD logs:

> Feb 12 13:56:42 opz2w-1 mpd[1205]: exception: CURL failed: The requested URL returned error: 404

Those errors seem to be related to this issue. However, that seems to be about media art that cannot be downloaded, and that should not stop the mp3 from playing I would say?

Has anybody experience with this setup?

Frigate recordings not working

$

I have been trying to integrate Frigate (running in a separate Docker) with Home Assistant (installed through HAOS). MQTT add-on and the Frigate integration are working, I can see the camera live stream in Home Assistant (through go2rtc), and notifications from Frigate seem to be working as well. Under Media > Frigate > Recordings > Camera, I also see folders per day with a recording file for each hour. However, when I open one of these recordings, the recordings are not displayed and instead an error message is given: “Error starting stream, see logs for details (Stream never started)”.

The recordings can be viewed in Frigate. The issue seems similar to Frigate Clips/Recording cant be played - #2 by Kdem and Frigate clips will not play on 24.11.1 · Issue #130145 · home-assistant/core · GitHub, but I am already using the latest version of Home Assistant so the proposed solutions do not seems to work for me (Core 2025.2.3, Supervisor 2025.02.0, Operating System 14.2, Frontend 20250210.0).

Any ideas how to solve this?

Hello. So I have a situation where my SSID and Password were changed unexpectedly. I haven’t been able to reach my RasPi 4 via ethernet (Won’t accept DHCP?), and I need to put in the new credentials. How can I do this?

What I have tried so far based on my search:
sd card: make “config” folder, file called “network” and put a config in it.

How do you handle your lighting?

Hello everyone,

I’m currently trying to brainstorm ideas for how to handle lighting in my home and am looking for ideas. Like most, I’ll be wanting dynamic lighting based upon time of day and motion sensors, however I’m also thinking of seperate lighting modes for example scenes and a party mode. I was thinking maybe a dropdown helper would be the best for this and then doing the lighting in a script tied to an automation?

How do you do your lighting? Do you have different modes like this?

Presence detection / device tracking on EE broadband (UK)

$

I have recently switched ISP from Sky UK to EE

With Sky i used the native Sky Hub integration for tracking devices on the network, which worked great.
With EE it seems not so easy…
There doesnt look to be any integration or custom component that plays nicely with EE broadband.
I have tried the BT Hub integrations (both), and neither work
I have the nmap integration running, but this can be slow to update, if coming or going falls in the ‘wrong’ moment of the scan interval

I have also tried the UPnP availability integration, but this no longer shows all devices as it did with Sky as my ISP. (UPnP is enabled on the router)

Just wondering if there are any fellow EE broadband users that have found anything that works?
For ref. I have the EE Smart Hub SH31B, model: F5394-CP EE

Reinventing the Wheel? Detailed HVAC Scheduling Dashboard

$
0
0

After numerous struggles with the Nest Learning Thermostat going offline, after some research I bit the bullet and purchased the
Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced. I have alot of logic including full control of opening and closing vents and turning fans on/off throughout the facility that change depending upon individual room temperatures, room human presence as well as vent pressure (so the move over to the new thermostat took about 1 1/2 hours of updating code(!)). This thermostat is fantastic as I am now able to control it locally (via the HomeKit integration) rather than the goofy cloud-based Google related overly complex slow and inconsistent Google Nest integration. It now responds instantly to any changes we make. In one area however, I have lost functionality. I used to have the Nest Learning Thermostat programmed hour by hour to adjust the temperature according to a schedule within the Nest app, which can be overriden whenever the temperature is changed (and then reverts back at the top of the hour to the schedule). The Ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced is much weaker in this area.

So I am considering creating a flexible HVAC scheduling dashboard which allows me to “reset” - esentially specifying the temperature which is set on the thermostat at repeated specific times - and name the schedule so I can easily flip from one schedule to another. Before I go down this rabbit hole, does anyone have any ideas about any templates or other sample yaml code or sample dashboards from which I can “steal” to speed up the creation of this monster?
